UC's Summer Professional Orientation Program

As an effectuation step to FUE's academic cooperation agreement with the University of Cincinnati (UC), FUE has the pleasure to announce the completion of the first UC's Summer Professional Orientation Program that takes place from 20th of July till 7th of August 2015. Where 8 FUE students; six from Faculty of Engineering & Technology and two from Faculty of Commerce & Business Administration complete= their three weeks course and has the privilege of knowing some of Ohio State’s history, culture and attractions. Each week included six hours daily instruction along with field trips and activities serving the learning objectives of each course.  

First week, students completed “Human Resource Management for Future Business Leaders”, delivered by Dr. Debbie Puckett who provided participants with basic understanding of all aspects of Human Resource management including ethics, employment management, recruiting, retention, saengineeringy and compliance. along with a field trip to “TQL” – Total Quality Logistics, Freight Brokerage Services which is a fast-paced, energetic sales organization in the third party logistics industry and known to be one of the highest recruitment rates, as well as a trip to “Cincinnati Art Museum” which is one of the oldest art museums in the United States where they had the privilege of going behind the scenes knowing all about monuments storage, restoration and the recruitment and development processes for the distinguished employees for such a specifically delicate employer.

Second week was reserved to “Special Topics in Design” delivered by Professor Thomas Huston, whose classes were filled with life, creativity and special activities through his interactive course providing participants with a basic understanding in a variety topics related successful engineering and design, including identifying customer needs, creative thinking and team work, planning and scheduling projects, the decision making process and sustainability, manufacturing and assembly. The coursework was filled with outdoor games to enhance creativity and team building skills between students.  

Third week was the week of challenges, it was the “Entrepreneurship” course week by Professor Charles H. Matthews who provided participants with a foundation for the total enterprise creation including crafting a business plan, creating organizations to pursue entrepreneurial objectives, how to be effective as an entrepreneur or member of an entrepreneurial team and how to evaluate new venture topics. Students had to come up with new inventions and study options for presenting their pitches to investors along with their full investment plan. In order to do so, Prof. Matthews took the students to different types of companies as field trips, meeting with companies’ presidents and marketers, after which, they were able to decide their final investment plans. They visited “CincyTech” which is a public-private seed-stage investor, “Brandery” A Brand-Focused Startup Accelerator Seed Funding, “Cintrifuse” which connects high-potential, venture-backable startups to advice, talent, funding, and customers and “HCDC” which is a nationally-recognized startup incubator.

By the end of their third week, students presented their pitches formally in front of their professors and UC Provost Prof. Beverly Davenport who announced their successful completion of the course and handed them their certificates of completion.  

 During those three weeks, UC prepared a full social agenda for students which included welcome and farewell dinners with UC professors and staff as well as Boat Trip dinner in the Ohio River, visits to some of Cincinnati’s attractions: Findlay Market, Washington Park, Carew Tower, Cincinnati Museum Center and Fountain Square. More fun continued during their visits to “Reds - Baseball Game”, “Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden” and “Kings Island” amusement park.
