Extra-Curricular Activities

Field Visits

Since 2006/07 the faculty has conducted scientific field visits to a number of governmental and civic agencies, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Arab League, the People's Assembly, the Shura Council, and the National Council for Human Rights.

The Soliya Connect Program

For six years in a row, students from the Faculty of Economics and Political Science have been in contact with their 3,000 counterparts from over twenty-five countries on a weekly basis, using the latest web-conferencing technology through the Soliya Connect Program which is an international non-profit organization. They discuss universal, regional, and national issues concerning politics, economics, conflicts, and peace, etc. The curriculum is mainly composed of readings and multi-media resources on a variety of topics, as weekly assignments for on-line group discussions.

Meanwhile, a video editing project is assigned, whereby students learn to create their own news reports using raw news footage pertaining to current international and regional issues. The faculty has integrated the Soliya Connect Program as part of three existing accredited multidisciplinary courses, under the supervision of the courses’ instructor, Dr. Salwa Thabet, Assistant Professor, Department of Public Administration. Soliya has indicated its appreciation of the quality of the students of Future University and the management of the program.

Social Media Program

Seattle University - Future University in Egypt (FUE)

Two Phases

As we believe in the importance of exposing our students to different global cultures, the faculty participated in the Social Media Program in both the fall and the spring, 2013-2014. The Social Media Program is a joint program between Future University and Seattle University in the United States. Ten Future University students participated in the program each semester. In the first phase (Fall 2013-2014), the program implemented two main projects. In the first project, both universities created an online blog on their Facebook pages and covered vital socio-political issues. In the other project, students of both universities jointly researched the role of social media in defending the issue of sexual harassment in Egypt. While in the second phase (Spring 2014), activities were expanded to include creating a Global Brain blog website for discussion and debate based on crowdsourcing and global brain techniques. Students and professors of both universities interactively communicated on a regular basis through well-organized video conferences and also in on-going interaction and coordination through both Facebook and Skype. The third phase of this program will start in the fall of 2015 and will be based on the outcome of first and second phases. Dr. Salwa Thabet and Mr. Kareem Ashour from our faculty and Dr. Greg Tuke and Dr. Peter Blomquist form Seattle University led the program interactions and discussions and guided the final projects.

Simulation Models

I-Model American Presidency (MAP):

The faculty hosts a number of simulation models, such as Model American Presidency (MAP). MAP is simply a live situation copying the work of the American presidency and began hosting these in 2010.

MAP attracts students with a reasonable awareness of the characteristics of the American political system and its current issues, especially those related to Egypt and the Arab world. Negotiations are conducted with the same procedures held at the meetings of the American officials who run the negotiations with other foreign officials.

Therefore, students are trained through academic sessions to cover areas like diplomatic negotiations, public discourse, research, crisis management and many others, preparing them for the conference for which they have been accepted.

At the end of the simulation's sessions, a conference is held where it brings out the best in all students and shows them what the experience feels like, being a real diplomat doing his or her best to handle and solve the issues, and reach realistic solutions.



II-Life and Training for Development (LTD):

Life and Training for Development (LTD) is a model which presents students with business workshops that aim at providing them with leadership and management skills. The training takes place in our faculty. The model is initiated by a number of undergraduate students from different institutions and was encouraged and sponsored by Future University.

The model develops the skills and potentials of students and trains them to think critically and take decisions.
 

III-Model United Nations (MUN):

The faculty hosted the Model United Nations (MUN) in the fall of 2011- 2012. MUN is simply a simulation to the real-life work of the United Nations. Students Participating in MUN get new experience, mix with different people from various backgrounds, and acquire knowledge that makes them aware of political, economic, and social events. Students will acquire several skills and experiences during the sessions taking place throughout the year, covering diplomatic negotiations, public speaking, UN rules of procedure, research, crisis management, etc.

IV-Arab Young Voices

The British Council in Egypt, in cooperation with Future University, implemented Young Arab Voices (YAV) at the University. This program is based on setting up debating clubs and organizing debating forums, involving diverse groups of young people. Its objectives are:
  • Increasing young people’s skills in public debate
  • Providing platforms for youth from diverse backgrounds to meet and exchange views
  • Providing targeted support for young bloggers, enabling them to bridge the gap between virtual and public space.
FUE University students are trained ion debatinge skills and participate in debating competitions with their counterparts from esteemed universities in Egypt. They participated in several debating competition with, Cairo University in 2012 and with Alexandria University, between March 13-14, 2013.

V. The Model of the Egyptian Stock Exchange (MESE)

The Model of the Egyptian Stock Exchange (MESE) was founded for the purpose of helping students to learn more about the Egyptian stock exchange by providing them with technical, and professional skills.

MESE’s sessions focus on the Egyptian stock market and how it operates. It provides students with hands-on knowledge in investing, banking, and brokering.

The faculty invited prominent Egyptian and foreign scholars and experts to give lectures to University staff and employees as well as to our faculty classes. H.E. Margaret Scobey, US Ambassador to Egypt, H.E. Wu Chuuhua, Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to Egypt, H. E. Hisham Nazer, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to Egypt, Haynes Mahoney, the US Cultural and Information Attaché at the US Embassy, Cairo, Andrew Mitchelle, the US Cultural Affairs Officer at the US Embassy, Cairo, Professor Ali El-Din Hilal, Former Minister of Youth, Dr. Amr El Shobaki, Former MP, Dr. Ali El Sawi, Professor of Political Science at Cairo University, H.E. Kwon Sae-young , Deputy Chief Mission (DCM), and the Ministers of Education of both the United Arab Emirates and Egypt, among others, participated in this series. The faculty plans to sustain and expand similar extra-curricular activities and forums and invite prominent public figures to interact with University staff and students. The Cultural attaché in the US Embassy, Cairo, delivered a lecture on comparative politics and the US political system to faculty students.

Foreign Visitors

In 2008/2009, the faculty received prominent visitors from the United States, Korea and Taiwan. We received graduate students and professors from the University of Maryland who were interested to learn about the Egyptian political system.
We also received a delegation of young politicians from the United States who discussed mutual interests. A delegation from South Korea, with the support of the Korean Embassy in Cairo, visited the faculty and discussed potential cooperation.
A high profile delegation from Taiwan was looking for avenues of cooperation with the faculty, which has become an attractive center of interest for foreign intellectuals, foreign experts, politicians, and diplomats.

Mr. Takeshi Okubo, Political Counselor, Embassy of Japan, Cairo, visited the faculty twice in 2010 and 2011 to discuss strategies for cooperation.

A delegation from US and Egyptian Fellows of the Gabr Fellowship visited the faculty and engaged in dialogue with its staff and students in May 2014.
