FUE Faculty of Economics and Political Science Conducts a General Debate
Egypt:  A State in the Making
A Transitional Phase?

On Sunday the 25th of December 2011, freshmen from the Faculty of Economics and Political Science conducted a debate on the current political situation in Egypt. As part of the tutorial Introduction to Political Science PSC 101, students divided themselves into three groups: 1) Group in support of the Supreme Council of Armed Forces (SCAF) procedures since the beginning of the revolution, 2) group against SCAF practices and procedures, and 3) group taking a middle approach. As a supplement to their scholastics, the debate provided students and the public an opportunity to share, discuss and challenge each other’s opinions, analysis and solutions. Students learn to debate passionately and openly while at the same time respecting all other views and perspectives.

The tutorial was prepared by the following Political Science department team members:  Sarra Moneir, Karim Ashour, Abdelrahman Rashdan, and Ahmed Salama.

Each group met regularly prior to the debate, preparing their arguments and ensuring sufficient evidence to support their arguments. Each group consisted of 10-15 members, out of whom two members are their elected representatives. The debate was marked by 4 phases:

1. 7 min presentation by each team’s representatives to present their arguments for or against SCAF using evidence such as video footage and pictures in order to prove their statements.

2. Moderators asked each group a set of questions they had to answer within 3 minutes:
A) When do you think the presidential elections should take place?
B) What are the priorities in solving the current situation according to your group’s views?
C) What do you think are the necessary steps to achieve national security?

3. The third phase was designed for each group to choose two questions, each question directed at one opposite group.

4. A general debate to unify goals and reach a preliminary agenda on what to do next.

The first session covered the first four phases and will be resumed during the next tutorial on the 1st of January 2012.

In Alliance with Universities in the Region, Future University Signs the AIEG Declaration on Integrity
October 2011

Future University is in full agreement with the Declaration on Integrity and has signed along with other Universities in the region to participate in the development of the Arab Integrity Education Network (AIEN). FUE participated in a workshop held in Sharm El-Sheikh on 28-30 October, 2011 by the Arab Integrity Education Group AIEG.

AIEG has declared the establishment of the Arab Integrity Education Network (AIEN) as a nucleus for supporting ethics and integrity practices and for fighting all forms of corruption in the Arab World. The agreement was signed by over 20 universities across the region. FUE has signed the agreement in full support of the efforts of the AIEG.

AIEG has unanimously stressed the need to diagnose the phenomenon of corruption and analyse all factors enhancing or holding back application of the values and practices of integrity. AIEG has also affirmed that some major obstacles to adopting policies and strategies on integrity are related to the Arab culture, traditions, and history; legal frameworks and organizational structures; as well as the systems and performance of the media. It has also agreed on setting an action plan to promote the cultures of integrity and fighting corruption, starting from Arab universities as they take the lead in societal, cultural, and ethical changes and advancement of civilizations; and because Arab universities can shape the future of the Arab World.

Professor Salwa M. Thabet and Professor Abdulmonem M. Al-Mashat represented FUE at the signing.

FUE will work in cooperation and good faith with AIEG and all signatories of the Network to promote a corruption free society that promotes prosperity and equality across the region.
