Pharmaceutical chemistry is the study of pharmaceuticals at the molecular level. The discipline emphasizes the chemical aspects of drug development including drug action, drug transportation, and drug delivery and targeting. Molecular-level understanding of biological processes and mechanisms of drug action is key to the development of new pharmaceuticals. Recent progress in the field has focused on structureal activity relationships, combinatorial chemistry, and computer-aided drug design. Chemists continue to be at the forefront of drug design, synthesis, testing, and development.
The Pharmaceutical Chemistry Department ensures pharmacy students are skilled and competent in all topics covered including, physical, analytical and organic chemistry as well as instrumental analysis and quality control, in addition to essential subjects of medicinal chemistry, drug design, and development.
