Personal Info: Professor S. Elkheshen has graduated from Faculty of Pharmacy at Cairo University on may 1981 with Honor and had her Ph.D in Pharmaceutics though a “Peace Fellowship” from the American government in collaboration between Faculty of Pharmacy, Cairo University, Egypt and College of Pharmacy, State University of Rhode Island, USA. Prof. Elkheshen has established and delivered many Pharmaceutical Courses for under and postgraduate students in several governmental and nongovernmental universities including Cairo University, Ain Shams University, King Saud University, MIU, GUC and FUE. She supervised more than 20 MsC and PhD students and published over 40 research articles in the field of Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical technology in national and international journals and conferences. Prof. Elkheshen occupied many administrative positions the two most recent ones being associate dean for education and student affairs at faculty of Pharmacy, Cairo University and recently, dean of Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Pharmaceutical Industries. Formulation of Ciprofloxacin Hydrochloride Loaded Biodegradable Nanoparticles: Optimization of the Formulation Variables - 01/0

The aim of this work was to formulate nanoparticles with longer sustainment since it can play an important role in treatment of chronic osteomyelitis. A factorial design 2 was used to optimize the formulation variables of ciprofloxacin hydrochloride (CP) loaded biodegradable nanoparticles (NPS). The effect of three independent variables, namely: the polymer type (Poly D, L-lactide-co-glycolide 50/50 & Poly (D, L-lactide), the polymer molecular weight (M.Wt) and the drug to polymer ratio on the particle size, encapsulation efficiency (EE%), zeta potential and the time required for 90% of ciprofloxacin to be released (t90%) was investigated. The selected drug loaded nanoparticles was subjected to further investigations including: scanning electron microscope (SEM), DSC, x-ray powder diffractometry and FTIR spectroscopy. Moreover the antimicrobial effectiveness of the selected formula was investigated. The results revealed that the mean particle size ranged from 180-355 nm while the EE% ranged from 52-70%. The selected formula retained its antimicrobial activity throughout the preparation process.

Formulation Of Ciprofloxacin Hydrochloride Loaded Biodegradable Nanoparticles: Optimization Of Technique And Process Variables - 01/0

Poly lactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA 502 H) nanoparticles incorporating ciprofloxacin HCI (CP) were prepared by double emulsion solvent diffusion technique. Methods: The influence of the application of probe sonication besides the high pressure homogenization in the preparation of the secondary emulsion and its application during the solidification step were studied. Their effect of the addition of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) during the preparation of the primary emulsion was studied. Moreover, the effect of the addition of 0.1 M sodium chloride and/or adjusting the external and extracting phases of pH 7.4 were investigated. The selected formula was examined using IR, X-ray, DSC and SEM and in vitro drug release. Results: These formulations showed an appropriate particle size ranges between 135.7 – 187.85 nm, a mean zeta potential ranging from 0.839 to 6.81 mV and a mean of EE% which ranged from 35% to 69% Conclusion: The presented data revealed the superiority of using probe sonication besides high pressure homogenization during the formation of secondary emulsion. Moreover, the results indicated that the tested factors had a pronounced significant effect on the EE%.
