Sustainability

Future University has embraced sustainability as a tool to enhance student learning and development, reduce costs, increase efficiencies, drive research and innovation and preserve environmental qualities. Motivating students, faculty and staff to integrate sustainability in all aspects of campus creates an effective approach to maximize its benefits.

The FUE Sustainability Plan has been developed to further integrate sustainability across campus, as well as to support future improvements in FUE scoring and rating.

Strategies and their associated actions will require investments of time, people and resources, but they will also result in many tangible economic, environmental and social benefits.
FUE concentrates its efforts across multiple performance areas including Education, Energy, Water, Transportation and Waste.

Education

Sustainability in the curriculum addresses the integration of cultural, economic, and environmental. Projects and perspectives that have positive impacts on future resources, ecosystem health and human wellbeing are supported.

There are multiple new student orientation activities, extracurricular events and peer to peer outreach activities on campus. New Student orientation incorporates an emphasis on sustainable practices in several ways.

Energy Conservation Program

FUE is highly convinced with the strategy that when purchasing light bulbs, many consumers opt for cheap incandescent bulbs, failing to take into account their higher energy costs and lower life spans when compared to modern compact fluorescent and LED bulbs. FUE realizes that although these energy-efficient alternatives have a higher upfront cost, their long lifespan and low energy use can save consumers a considerable amount of money. The price of LEDs has also been steadily decreasing in the past five years, due to improvement of the semiconductor technology. Many LED bulbs on the Egyptian market qualify for utility rebates that further reduce the price of purchase to the consumer. FUE future plan in this regard is to replace ordinary classical lighting in all buildings and facilities on campus with modern compact fluorescent and LED alternatives. The purpose of this policy is Energy conservation and sustainability.

Water Conservation Program

Scientifically-proven advances in water technology allow communities to reuse water for many different purposes, including industrial cooling and irrigation. Recycled water, is former wastewater (sewage) that is treated to remove solids and impurities.

FUE Water Conservation Program adopts the use of recycled water in sustainable landscaping irrigation within the University campus as well as in washing cars. This can be done through the available governmental recycled water piping network. The purpose of these processes is water conservation and sustainability.

Transportation

For the safety and comfort of university students and staff, the university uses a modern fleet of buses, including the latest Mercedes models. Current available models are:

- New 400 model 2015 with air conditioning and a capacity to carry fifty passengers.
- R 250 model 2015 with air condition and a capacity to carry thirty-three passengers.

All university buses are painted white with the university logo in Arabic and English.  Sustainability

Recycle Program

Waste collection methods vary widely among different countries and regions. Domestic waste collection services are often provided by local government authorities, or by private companies. Some areas, especially those in less developed countries, do not have formal waste-collection systems.

FUE is totally conceived with the culture of recycling which is a resource recovery practice that refers to the collection and reuse of waste materials. Material for recycling may be collected separately from general waste using dedicated bins and collection vehicles, a procedure called Curbside collection.

FUE adopts the Curbside collection method of disposal in which waste is collected at regular intervals associated with curb-side waste segregation. In this process the waste materials is separated into different bins (e.g. for paper, plastics, metals) prior to its collection.
Waste collected is then transported to an appropriate disposal facility.
