Bridges construction are one of the most challenging construction projects around the world as it necessitates a lot of engineering, experience, equipment, and a huge deal of money. Consequently, it is indispensable to consider appropriately how to direct the monetary total spent on such projects. Currently the selection process of bridge‘s superstructure construction methods in Egypt mainly depends on the experts‘ knowledge and experience without performing or applying a systematic procedure. Thus, the decision might not be the most suitable one as some important considerations could be neglected Recently, box-girder bridges are considered as one of the most common systems of Nile bridges constructed in Egypt and it is also widely used all over the world. There are many methods of the construction of box-girder bridges. Therefore in order to select the most appropriate construction method many factors should be well considered as site conditions, technology used, construction method characteristics and bridge physical characteristics. In this study, a machine learning model is developed to determine the most appropriate box-girder bridge construction method, applying the spirit of Value Engineering technique. Value Engineering is used for comparing the different construction methods for achieving the required basic function after considering the main significant factors and without affecting the desired quality.

Decision support system for optimal bridge’ maintenance

Bridges represent a significant percentage of the economy of many countries. They are a vital component of the country's road and highway network. Bridges are subjected to harsh environmental conditions throughout their service-life and consequently structural deterioration occurs. Asset managers are required to maintain networks in good service conditions and; in many cases with limited funds. The objective of this research is to develop a decision support system (DSS) for concrete bridges that provides assistance to the decision maker in evaluating and prioritizing the maintenance strategy of bridges. Thus, the decision maker can identify the urgency level of repair and select the optimal maintenance plan, either for a network of bridges, or on a single level, taking budget limitations into consideration. A comprehensive survey was conducted for data collection in order to build the system's database. This database includes different factors which are incorporated into the evaluation process. These factors include the bridge's defects, repair techniques and repair costs. Dynamic programing software was used to develop the optimal solution for the maintenance plan via creating a family of Pareto optimal alternatives for the DSS developed. A case study for DSS validation was implemented using Egyptian bridge networks. Results were also verified by questionnaire surveys sent to engineers working at the General Authority for Roads, Bridges and Land Transports who are dealing with Egypt's BMS. The responses to the questionnaires show that the developed DSS is comprehensive as it contains most of the critical parameters and its results are reasonable.

Evaluation Criteria for Maintenance Priorities of Bridges

It has been observed that there is no maintenance plan in most of the developing countries and maintenance is only conducted based on users' complaints or when significant structural defect is obvious to the public. Therefore, it is very important to have assessment criteriaof bridges as accurate evaluation is one of the most important and significant steps in any maintenance plan of bridges. The main purpose of this paper is to develop a criterion which is capable of assessing and evaluating the bridges, their overall condition and the condition of each element.Moreover,to develop a method that canrank the bridges in a network according to their repairing urgency. First of all different inspection typesare reviewed, then in order to obtain reliable judgment the experience and knowledge of the bridge maintenance experts in Egypt were added to the criteria by carrying out questionnaires and interviews with these experts in order to set the importance of each parameter in the evaluation criteria and the importance of each element of bridges. Finally obtaining a Bridge Overall Priority Indicator (BOPI) that ranks bridges in a network according to their condition and maintenance urgency. As a result, advancedapproach and accurate judgment to bridges is created through evaluating and assessing each parameter that may affect bridges. Also criterion that can help decision makers to rank the bridges according to their maintenance urgency is proposed
