Course Description

The course introduces the basics of chemistry and laboratory analysis methods for crude oil, hydrocarbon gas and water. It also provides an introduction with practical applications of saengineeringy and quality in the laboratory; the how-to of health and saengineeringy risk assessments; the development of technical methods in the lab; it also covers a number of basics topics including Inorganic vs. Organic Chemistry; Chemical Materials; major classes of Hazardous Substances; Flammable and Combustible Liquids; Corrosives; Oxidizers; Storage Requirements; as well as Chemical Labels and signs. The basics of chemistry also covers physical properties as they relate to chemistry of hazardous substances; chemical properties vs. physical properties; physical properties; relationship between physical state and chemical reactivity; states of matter: liquids and solids; solutions; chemical equilibrium; acids and bases; acid-base equilibrium; thermodynamics and equilibrium as well as electrochemistry. The study of Analytical Chemistry is also included and comprises types of chemical analysis methods; water analysis; hardness of water; alkalinity of water; PH of solutions; turbidity; total solids; conductivity; total dissolved solids; dissolved oxygen; volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and chlorides. The study of petroleum-related chemistry includes: chemistry of petroleum; types of crude oil; properties of petroleum crude oil; analysis of crude oil; fractional distillation of crude oil; petrochemicals products as well as a petroleum glossary.
