FUE was built with an awareness of having students with special needs. Moreover, our professors also accommodate the needs students with special needs whereby what seems impossible becomes a reality. With a hard of hearing disability, the graduate student from the Faculty of Oral and Dental Medicine exemplifies FUE’s commitment to students with special needs. After graduating and making her the first hard of hearing dentist with a speech impairment in the world to address a speech at the United Nations on May 15, 2017 and has since been successfully practicing at her private clinic.

FUE Disability Services (DS) addresses the conditions of students with special needs. The purpose of DS is to enable students to effectively receive equal learning opportunities that enable them to academically perform successfully. Accordingly, DS is committed to resolving the difficulties that students with special needs may face. Disabilities may include mobility, hearing, visual or phycological impairments.

Mobility-related disability entails the student’s inability to move around campus. To accommodate such a type of impairment, ramps are strategically founded across University buildings. Ramps are situated to allow wheelchair access to the various campus areas. University facilities, such as the caengineeringeria, are typically found on the ground floor. However, if a facility is located on the second or third floor, an elevator is available, which is the case with the library.

Hard of hearing disability may result in the student’s inability to follow a lecture and/or to take notes. Additionally, a common condition associated with those who are hard of hearing is speech difficulty. To address the hard of hearing disability, not only is a front row seat designated in every lecture room, the university also assigns a disability buddy who accompanies the student in all the lectures that need to be attended. He becomes the student note-taker and may also assist in other ways, such as repeating something the student said in a louder and clearer way.

Visual disability results in the student’s inability to move around the campus or to function effectively unless s/he Is accompanied. Therefore, students that suffer from visual impairment are assigned a disability buddy who accompanies them while throughout their presence on campus. In this case, the buddy would also act as a note-taker, reader and writer.

Psychological disability this area of disability includes a variety of psychological maladies such as Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Dyslexia. With minor adjustments to university lifestyle, students suffering from such disabilities can successfully complete their university degree. Examples of these adjustments and services include providing students with extra time to take their exams. Students may also be given one-on-one therapeutic sessions. Topics for these sessions vary to address exam and assignment-related issues like anxiety, how to improve one’s attention, how to manage time effectively, etc. ….

Common Grounds Solutions:
Irrespective of what the disability is, there are a few common services that DS extends to our students with special needs. Examples of these are to provide:

    1- Disability Buddies:
  • Designated exam areas for students who need disability buddies to sit for exams
  • Extra exam time for students who need disability buddies to answer exams
    2- Extra Exam Time:
  • Extra exam time for students with special needs and do not have disability buddies to answer exams
    3- Extra Assignment Time:
  • Students with special needs are given extra assignment duration time for completion of the assignment. Sometimes it may be necessary to break the assignment into smaller tasks.
    4- Clear and Slow Instructions:
  • Instructors and proctors pay special attention to students with special needs when it comes to giving instructions or asking questions which must be done in a way that accommodates the student’s disability.
    5- Software Assisted Education:
  • Alternative exam methods that include the use of computer software for visual or auditory disabilities are available as per examinee’s disability.
  • Examples of these are text to speech learning tool; reading software; zoom text, screen magnifier; and speaking software, which is a speech to text recognition software.
    6- Library assistance:
  • Library assistance when it comes to the different kind of ways the library is used, this may include searching for books, notetaking, reading, photocopying a section or chapter from a book and borrowing books.
    7- Teaching Faculty:
  • Though outside DS, yet FUE teaching staff willingly extend their office hours when a student with special needs wishes to meet with a faculty member and is unable to fit into the office hours schedule. Moreover, in the case of practical faculties, special needs’ students carrying on lab work are given extra attention and time to complete their assignments.
To Receive Disability Services:

When applying to university, the guardians of students with special needs are requested to present medical documentation for their son/daughter explaining the student’s condition. The guardian presents a written request in which the ramifications of his son/daughter’s condition are included mentioning the type of assistance s/he may need. This way the university ensures the availability of the necessities that would enable the student to receive optimum benefit and a suitable learning situation.

Students with special needs are also welcomed to use the university hostel. Student companions are also may also share the same room if there is a justified need for that. In all cases, early registration is advised to ensure availability of a room. Moreover, if a student with a disability were to need to special arrangements made in his accommodation, the university will consider the feasibility of the request on a case-by-case basis.
