Text Book Description:

Course Description:

ENG101 (KET) academic reading and writing course focuses on reading and writing as integrally related skills. Students study and practice reading comprehension, the writing process, and critical thinking. Students create clear and correct sentences as they develop the skills necessary to write a variety of focused, developed, and organized paragraphs and/or short essays. Critical Thinking skills also give students the tools they need to formulate their own opinions and express themselves effectively.

Intended Learning Outcomes:

Knowledge and Understanding
By the end of the course, the student should be able to:
• Discuss different aspects of life.
• Discuss principles of recognizing text types.
• Identify a few simple grammatical structures and sentence patterns in a learned repertoire.
• Discuss the fundamental concepts that explain the basic vocabulary range of isolated words and phrases related to particular situations.

Practical / Professional Skills
By the end of the course, the student should be able to:
• Evaluate different methods to produce varied paragraphs.
• Analyze and design different means to construct descriptive sentences.
• Evaluate new ideas.
• Implement charts to organize ideas.
• Acquire a set of fundamental research skills from different resources to manipulate simple phrases and sentences about themselves and imaginary people.

Intellectual Skills
By the end of the course, the student should be able to:
• Analyze facts and information from texts.
• Determine measurement criteria to evaluate information.
• Prepare proposals and presentations to analyze texts through graphic organizers.
• Prepare proposals to implement their knowledge through engaging and communicative activities.
• Analyze the functionality of inferring meaning from various texts.

General and Transferable Skills
By the end of the course, the student should be able to:
• Apply communication skills and techniques in presentations and report writing.
• Work in a team effectively and efficiently considering time and stress management.
• Exploit a range of learning resources to understand different cases.

Class policies:

• Attend all classes, be on time, and be ready to begin work.
• Show respect to the instructor and other students.
• Do not cause any disruption in class.
• Turn off your cell phone.
• Do not eat or drink in the classroom.
• Speak only English in the classroom.
• Bring your own textbooks. Failure to do so may result in exclusion from the classroom.

Attendance policy:

A student may withdraw from the program if he or she is absent for up to 25 percent of the course provided he/she does so within the time permitted for withdrawal which is during the first twelve weeks of the academic semester. If the absence exceeds 25 percent, a student will not be allowed to withdraw from the course and will not be permitted to attend lectures or sit the final examination and will receive a failing grade of 'F' on the course. The student shall be given at least one warning before being placed on the excluded list.

Assessment:

Students must receive a minimum of 50 percent pass overall to go to the next level.
