Protecting children from those who would cause them harm is a responsibility shared by all members of society including the dental team members. When any of us, as members of the public, come to hear something about a child that concerns us, we have a responsibility to report our concerns to someone who can help. The objectives of this presentation for the listener to be aware of:

  • This role of child safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility. This role has become cemented in the legislation of many developed countries.
  • Child maltreatment and safeguarding from a United Kingdom and a United Arab Emirates perspective
  • Experience of the UK in this regard where professionals belonging to multiple agencies that see children receive mandatory specific child protection training. Systems are in place for these multi-agencies to work together for the sake of protecting children.
  • The dental team professionals are part of a wider professional platform that have access to the care of children, and increasingly have an important role in the detection of child maltreatment and taking action to safeguard them.
  • There may me signs of maltreatment that a dental surgeon may be able to detect when assessing a child. The dentist must have an action plan to follow in such events.
