Dr. Berrin Tansel is a professor in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at Florida International University (FIU). She has over 25 years of experience in environmental engineering, water quality management and infrastructure systems. Before joining FIU, she was a project manager at Massachusetts Water Resources Authority and Center for Environmental Management at Tufts University.

Dr. Tansel is an elected Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and Environmental and Water Resources Institute (EWRI). She is a Diplomate of American Academy of Water Resources Engineers, and Board Certified Environmental Engineer by the American Academy of Environmental Engineers. She is a registered professional engineer in the State of Florida.

Dr. Tansel is the recipient of ASCE Edmund Freidman Professional Achievement Award, EWRI Outstanding Achievement Award, the U.S. Army Freedom Team Salute Commendation from U.S. Army-Manpower and Reserve Affairs, and was named 2007 Engineer of the Year by the ASCE’s Miami-Dade Branch. Dr. Tansel is the managing editor of the Journal of Environmental Management and serves on the editorial boards of American Society of Civil Engineers’ (ASCE) Journal of Natural Hazards Review, Journal of Bioremediation & Biodegradation, Journal of Petroleum & Environmental Biotechnology, and Journal of Civil & Environmental Engineering. Dr. Tansel’s research interests include physical/chemical/biological interactions in surfaces, water quality, physico-chemical processes in the environment. She has published over 200 journal papers, book chapters, technical reports and two books.
